MEET HANS

Local - Experienced - Independent

Hans Roach is proud to serve as the City of Waterloo Councillor for Ward 3. He is running for re-election because he believes Ward 3 deserves local, experienced, independent leadership.

For Hans, Ward 3 is not just a place on a map. It is home.

Hans grew up in the Lakeshore area and has lived in Waterloo for decades. He knows the parks, rinks, schools, streets, trails, businesses, and community spaces that make Ward 3 such a special place to live. His connection to the ward is personal. It is where he has raised family, volunteered, coached, listened, and served.

Before being elected to Waterloo City Council, Hans built a long career in medical technology sales and management, working with health-care professionals, hospitals, and teams across Canada. That experience taught him the importance of listening carefully, solving problems practically, and being accountable for results.

Hans also served as a Waterloo Catholic District School Board Trustee, where he worked on issues affecting students, families, and schools across the community. He has spent many years volunteering in local sport and community organizations, including serving as President of Waterloo Minor Hockey and supporting local arts, culture, youth, and neighbourhood initiatives.

On Council, Hans has worked to be a strong and accessible voice for Ward 3 residents. He has focused on the issues people raise most often: affordability, taxes, traffic, responsible growth, parks, recreation, community facilities, and safer neighbourhoods.

Hans was the only councillor to vote against recent tax increases because he believes City Hall must take affordability seriously. Families, seniors, young people, and small businesses are all feeling the pressure, and Hans believes councillors have a responsibility to ask tough questions about spending and priorities.

Hans also believes Waterloo must grow responsibly. New housing is needed, but growth must be matched with infrastructure, parks, traffic planning, transit, safety, and respect for existing neighbourhoods. Ward 3 residents deserve a councillor who understands both the need for housing and the real pressures that rapid development can place on local communities.

Hans is especially proud of his work supporting investment in the Albert McCormick Community Centre and the surrounding community spaces that mean so much to Ward 3 families. These are the places where children learn to skate, seniors stay active, neighbours gather, and community life happens.

Hans has always believed that municipal government should be about practical service, not party labels. At City Hall, his loyalty is to Ward 3 residents. He works with people across the political spectrum and makes decisions based on what he believes is fair, affordable, and right for the community.

As Waterloo’s first and only elected councillor of colour, Hans also understands the importance of representation, inclusion, and making sure every resident feels they have a voice at City Hall. He is proud to be part of Waterloo’s diverse community and to serve residents from every background.

Hans is running for re-election to continue being a councillor who listens, shows up, asks tough questions, and puts Ward 3 first.

Why Hans is running again

Ward 3 is changing. Families are facing higher costs. Roads are busier. Development pressures are growing. Residents want safe streets, strong parks, good community facilities, and a City Hall that respects taxpayers.

Hans is running again because he believes Ward 3 needs a councillor with deep local roots, real experience, and independent judgment.

His priorities are clear:

  • Keeping Waterloo affordable

  • Managing growth responsibly

  • Improving traffic safety and neighbourhood livability

  • Supporting parks, recreation, libraries, and community spaces

  • Being accessible and responsive to residents

  • Putting Ward 3 ahead of party politics

A message from Hans

I am grateful every day for the opportunity to serve Ward 3.

This community has shaped my life. I know its history, its strengths, and its challenges. I also know that residents want a councillor who listens, responds, and makes decisions with common sense.

Ward 3 is not just a place where I campaign. It’s where I grew up, where I raised my family, where I served, and where I continue to show up.

I am not running to represent a political party. I am running to represent you.

If re-elected, I will continue to work hard for Ward 3, ask tough questions at City Hall, and focus on the issues that matter most to residents: affordability, responsible growth, traffic safety, strong neighbourhoods, and practical local service.

Thank you for your support.
